On March 7th, members of the sports media and journalism team had the opportunity to visit Sam Houston and learn about the college-level media production and reporting. Students participate in hands-on activities and visuals to get a real feel of what they might experience in the future.

Journalist Josh Criswell and Assistant Professor of Sports Media Lucas McKenzie met with students to explain their roles and the opportunities available in their fields. Just a few rooms away, three students in the student newsroom shared details about their responsibilities and how they balance their newsroom work with college life. It prepared students by giving them a better understanding of what college can look like and offering dos and don’ts for campus.
Legacy members of sports media and journalism also received individual bags of Sam Houston information and newspapers. The materials inspired students to find unique ways to write and take photos.

Students visited multiple rooms throughout the visit. One stop was a podcast booth, where Sam Houston students stated that many debates and conversations take place while recording. They also visited a classroom with cameras arranged in a popular setup they use. Students were able to move the cameras around and discuss with McKenzie and Criswell about how things work.
The last hands-on activity was located in the Media Studio, where students got to be on set and practice recording and communicating on and off the camera.
The final stop was back in the classroom, where students got to ask questions and learn more about the field from roles Mr. Josh and Lucas. Even staff who came along asked intriguing questions to learn more about the field. Overall, the visit provided students with a hands-on experience that allowed them to learn about the college-level work of sports media and journalism.
