By Skye Samuel, Legacy Sophomore

Last weekend, a few Legacy students and I went with Mr. Dixon (Quest Learning Institute) and Mrs. Chapman (Legacy Spanish teacher) to feed the homeless in downtown Houston. It was one of the most humbling experiences I have ever had. When we got there, I didn’t really know what to expect. We helped hand out food and drinks to people who really needed them. Some people smiled and said thank you, and some people just looked really tired. It made me realize that not everyone has a warm home, food every day, or even someone to talk to. That really opened my eyes.

Being in downtown Houston and seeing so many people in need made me think about how blessed I am. I have a bed to sleep in, food in my kitchen, and a family that cares about me. Sometimes I forget to be thankful for those things, but this experience reminded me that I should never take them for granted. I am also very thankful that Mr. Dixon and Mrs. Chapman chose me to go. It made me feel proud because it showed that they see leadership and heart in me. That means a lot. It made me want to work even harder to be a good example and to help others whenever I can. This trip didn’t just help the people we gave food to; it helped me, too. It taught me kindness, gratitude, and how important it is to serve others. I hope I get the chance to do something like this again, because even a small act of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s day.

To all of our Titans, I want to say this: always be thankful for what you have. Even the small things matter. We are blessed in so many ways, and we should never forget that. Let’s continue to show leadership, heart, and kindness in our school and in our community.
