Evolving from other tests, STAAR testing began in 2011-2012 to prepare students for future success and academic readiness. Administrators can see how students have improved throughout the year and how much they have grown.
Here at Legacy, it has been a busy few weeks! Being a college-ready school, students are preparing for STAAR and studying hard.
Students have been given a variety of help through practice sheets, reviews, daily quizzes, and preparation assignments to ensure that they are ready for testing. However, there are some mixed emotions about the workload placed on students.
Sophomore Aurora Key said, “Honestly, it’s been really stressful, but I’ve been trying to study more and remember what I was taught.”
Freshman Stephanie Vargas said she likes the refresh we get before taking tests, but also said we don’t get to prep for STAAR that often.
English teacher Ms. Dagen said, “I prepare students in the fall by using similar question stems and setups. In the spring, we review those strategies that we learned in the fall.”
As a teacher of 143 students, she stated that sometimes it can be frustrating because she helps us prepare for STAAR, but students don’t make use of those skills when it comes to doing the work. On the contrary, she said she has seen a lot of growth from students who were in English I, now in English II.

An exciting moment for students and teachers, STAAR is almost over. Soon, we will begin preparing for finals and end-of-year tests!
