What is Sports Medicine?

Sports Medicine is an important career path at Legacy the School of Sport Sciences, which teaches students about the industry and helps athletes understand their injuries. Students in the program also help with diagnosing and rehabilitating individuals. A senior, Genesis Gallegos, stated that Sports Medicine is the backbone of every team. Without this extracurricular, all athletic teams would be hectic and scattered. Athletes wouldn’t be properly hydrated or taken care of, and injuries would often go unattended.

Deep Dive

Genesis Gallegos has been in the Sports Medicine program for 7 years. She is the student head trainer and believes that it is important to keep a close friendship with the team, have good communication skills, use critical thinking, and be independent.

Another senior in Sports Medicine, Kala Jackson, is in her second year of participating in this elective. She stated that her role is important because she needs to be there in case any student is having an emergency. She added, “It is important because you can use what you’ve learned in the real world. Joining sports med has also helped with my social anxiety.”

The head trainer, Coach Rob, has been working in the field of Sports Medicine for 16 years, and she has been at Legacy for 8 years. She stated, “We take care of everyone all the time, empowering student trainers. Effective communication is needed consistently.”

Not only does this organization help athletes, but it also helps everyday students. When someone is feeling sick or has previous injuries in need of attention, the Sports Medicine team is always there to help.

The medicine team agreed they had to deal with a lot of cramps among the players. To fix it, they give students pickle juice to drink, which provides them with electrolytes. They can also give them a muscle rub. With precaution, they handle open wounds by gloving up and using gauze to disinfect them. They also wrap players to treat previous injuries or prevent new ones and to add arch support to flat feet. These are just a few of the things they handle daily.

As you can see, this group holds the pieces together. The goal of this article was for Sports Medicine to gain the recognition it deserves. So, keep in mind: they have one of the most important roles on campus—being the backbone of not just the athletes, but the entire school.

Reading about sports medicine, I’m struck by how training principles map to recovery: assessment, a phased plan, and a team around you. I’ve progressed the same way—start with a confidential assessment, stabilize if needed with medical detox, then a residential program that blends evidence-based therapy, group work, family counselling, nutrition, and sleep hygiene. Like rehab from an injury, I track small wins and use relapse-prevention strategies the way athletes use return-to-play protocols. At the Canadian Centre for Addictions, individualized treatment and long-term aftercare keep momentum going beyond the “season.” If you want a performance mindset for healing, this approach to addiction makes real sense.
